Morton's Neuroma
This is a painful condition usually affecting the third or fourth toes and, less commonly, the second or third toes. The pain is much worse in shoe gear, especially in thin-soled and flexible shoes. The first sign of this problem is unusual sensations registering in the fourth toe.
The classical Morton's Neuroma patient will sit down on the curb, remove his shoe, and massage his foot for relief. The condition is actually an overgrowth of the covering of the nerve between the bases of the toes involved.
The podiatrist will prescribe more appropriate shoe gear, which would be a well-cushioned inner sole, inflexible outer sole, wide-toe boxed walking shoe. The podiatrist may also perform a special injection, install special pads, and in chronic cases remove the offending nerve. This surgery is done in an out-patient facility and usually provides complete relief.
